Since the Year 2000, and the first initiative called Civic Net, the promise of fiber optic communications to the home and small businesses has been our "Field of Dreams". Why are fiber optics so important to Bronzeville?
- Fiber optics generally need to be installed with a considerable amount of prior planning and some level of redundancy to be cost effective. Bronzeville has a number of lots and properties that are at "Grade Level" or vacant. Hanging cables from light or utility poles will be easier if done prior to construction.
- With the improvement of aerial optical ground wire (OPT-GW), even Chicago's harsh weather is not an obstacle to the use of Chicago's grid of power poles and distribution facilities.
- The tremendous capacity and bandwidth that is characteristic of fiber deployment is very attractive to information intensive businesses. It is a tremendous asset to have in the community toolkit when attempting to attract new business into an area, or a new tenant into a building.
- The creative arts are enhanced by the addition of bandwidth, and the independent artist, producing out of his home or small studio is no longer disadvantaged in competing with the artist located in the wired studio with full access.
Chicago has planned, assessed, strategized, offered and promised. To unleash the creative potential of Chicago, the information superhighway should be the project of this decade, much like the "Dan Ryan" was the project of the decade of the 60's. It's the perfect fit.
